The Music Technology Department of Shenyang Conservatory of Music was established in December 2017 by the merger of the original Musical Instrument Technology Department and the original Music and Health Department. The original Musical Instrument Technology Department was formerly known as "Piano Repair Major", which was founded in 1976. The professional direction of violin making and national musical instrument development was added in 1984, and it was renamed "Musical Instrument Repairing and Building Major" with a three-year academic system; it was renamed "The Department of Musical Instrument Technology" in 1999 with a four-year undergraduate education system. Since 2002, it will enroll postgraduates of academic (2002-2016) and professional degree (2017-present), with a three-year education system. The original Department of Music and Health was established in 2007 and enrolled in 2008. The school system is a four-year undergraduate. In 2016, the former Department of Musical Instrument Technology and the former Department of Music, Music and Health jointly applied for the "Art-Design-Art and Technology" major in the undergraduate catalog of the Ministry of Education and were approved, which opened up new areas for the school in terms of science programs.
The Music Technology Department now has three teaching and research offices and a teaching laboratory covering four professional directions. Three teaching and research sections are: keyboard instrument repairing and building, string instrument making and wind instrument maintenance, music and health teaching and research offices. One laboratory consists of two platforms, musical instrument technology research studio and music and health therapy studio, which are applied in teaching, research and practice. The four major directions are: keyboard instrument repairing and building, string instrument making, wind instrument repairing, and music and health.
The main course, basic course and elective course are offered. Including 32 courses: keyboard instrument repairing and building, string instrument production, music therapy theory and application, introduction to musical instrument structure, musical instrument acoustics, music psychology, etc. It has formed a reform and innovation curriculum system with the design concept of overall crossover, in-depth development, scientific proportion of quality and vocational education, reasonable level of ordinary and high-end training, so as to achieve the educational purpose and goal of cultivating high-quality, compound, applied professionals.
The Music Technology Department has a team of teachers and management with strong sense of responsibility, high professional theoretical level and practical teaching ability, and reasonable age and academic background structure. There are 15 full-time teachers, 1 overseas distinguished professor, 3 on-campus professors, 2 off-campus professors and 1 teacher, and 4 famous experts as guest professors. Among the 15 full-time teachers, teachers with doctoral and master’s degrees account for 86.7%. At the same time, it actively cultivates young strengthen teachers, supports and selects teachers to study in world-class universities, recruits and selects domestic outstanding young talents, and builds a team of teaching teachers with decent thinking, strong professionalism, solid work style and reasonable academic background.
The Music Technology Department has continuously accumulated and explored in the development of teaching, scientific research and social practice for many years. It trains a large number of outstanding professionals for the country, including industry leaders, entrepreneurs, technical backbones, academic leaders, and teaching, management and scientific research backbones of many universities and enterprises. They teach and work at Wuhan Conservatory of Music, Xi’an Conservatory of Music, Capital Normal University, Nanjing Normal University, Northeast Normal University, Shaanxi Normal University, Shenyang Normal University, Hailun Piano Co., Ltd., and Beijing Xinghai Piano Co., Ltd.
At the same time, in the course of running the school for many years, the Department of Music Technology has accumulated rich teaching and scientific research results, including: undertaking the Youth Scientific Research Fund Project of the Ministry of Education, the Liaoning Province International (Border) and Foreign High-end Talent Joint Training (Team) Project, and the Liaoning Provincial Department of Education Humanities and social sciences projects, participated in more than a dozen national education fund projects, Shenyang Conservatory of Music scientific research projects, etc.; published two books and dozens of high-quality papers; won the sixth "Five Top Project Prize", " The third prize of Science and Technology Achievements of the Ministry of Culture, the "Provincial Scientific Research Achievement Award of the Ministry of Culture", the third prize of the "Undergraduate Teaching Achievement of General Higher Education in Liaoning Province", and the Outstanding Achievement Award of Humanities and Social Sciences of Liaoning Province. Teachers and students have won dozens of awards in national and provincial professional skill competitions.
The Music Technology Department pays great attention to the application characteristics of professional fields and increases the practical links of education and teaching. It actively develops school-school, school-enterprise cooperation and base construction. Besides, it has successively signed cooperation agreements with the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Xinghai Conservatory of Music, Hailun Piano Co., Ltd., Northeast China Architecture Design and Research Institute, Shenyang Ziweiheng Testing Equipment Co., Ltd., Yingkou Ibach Piano Co., Ltd. and other units. It also have established cooperation and exchanges with American State University in Atlanta, Steinway Piano Co., Ltd., Yamaha Musical Instruments Co., Ltd., Shengjing Hospital Rehabilitation Center Affiliated to China Medical University, Shenyang Disabled Persons’ Federation and other units to provide teaching, scientific research and practice for talent training and innovation and entrepreneurship platform.
In addition, it actively carry out domestic and foreign academic exchange activities and held the "Second National University Piano Tuning and Repairing Professional Education Forum", preparing for the establishment of the "National University Piano Tuning and Repairing Professional Education Alliance", establishing the "Liaoning Provincial Musical Instrument Industry School-Enterprise Alliance", and carrying out the "First National University Piano Tuning and Repairing Skills competition" and a number of graduate entrepreneurship and employment job fairs. Taking full advantage of the academic advantages of the Shenyang Conservatory of Music, it has had a broad and far-reaching influence in the field of professional construction in universities. In recent years, many domestic and foreign experts from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, San Francisco Branch of the American Piano Technicians Association, Shanghai Conservatory of Music, China Conservatory of Music, Xinghai Conservatory of Music and Tianjin Conservatory of Music have been invited to give lectures in our department. Teachers from our department have also been invited. The American Oberlin Conservatory of Music, the Korean Piano Technician Association, Xinghai Conservatory of Music, Shanghai Huapu Piano Factory, Xinghai Piano Factory, Yingkou Piano Factory and other colleges and enterprises conducted professional academic exchanges, which have had a good influence at home and abroad and further strengthened the mutual promotion and common development of professional teaching.
In the future, the Music Technology Department will conscientiously implement the deployment and instructions of the national and provincial party committees. Under the leadership of the school party committee, continue to adhere to the spirit of pragmatism, innovation and overcoming difficulties and fully explore the highlights and advantages of this major. To achieve the goal of building a double first-class discipline and make a positive contribution to the establishment of a "high-level, distinctive and international first-rate music school".
